Write-ins still must be authorized

Depending on where they live, Union County residents might see a variety of lines for writein candidates on their ballots next week.
While those lines are not uncommon occurrences, election officials said they don’t just automatically show up. In fact, there is a step that must be taken to become an official write-in candidate.
“All the votes do get counted, but write-in candidates only get elected if they filed a declaration of intent to be a write-in candidate,” said Brandon Clay, director of the Union County Board of Elections. “If we don’t get that, then no write-ins appear on the ballot.”
