Federal cuts land locally

Some county departments are feeling the effects of funding cuts at the federal level.

The Union County Health Department, Mental Health and Recovery Board and Soil and Water Conservation District all have seen some changes as a result of recent cuts made by the Trump administration.

Health Commissioner Jason Orcena said his office has already had funding stopped as a result of the cuts. The UCHD lost access to $245,000 from a grant that helped with communicable disease projects and staffing.

“This is unusual to have something that is set to expire in December, to just lose it so unexpectedly,” Orcena said. “It just stopped our plans to use the funds.”
