Commissioners air concerns over property tax relief

The Union County Commissioners said doing away with property taxes would be a financial disaster.

At a recent regular meeting, the board discussed the proposals being floated around statewide and noted that the decision to get rid of the taxes would come with severe consequences for not only the county but for taxpayers.

Commissioner Tom McCarthy said it would be a financial disaster for a number of reasons.

“Essentially, the sales tax and the income tax that the state collects is about $23 billion and the property taxes collected aggregately is about $22 billion, so if you eliminate it, you’ve got to double every other tax,” he sa…
