SNAP benefits increase, but so does qualifying limit

Union County residents receiving food assistance benefits could see a slight increase in the amount starting this month, but changes may also reduce the number of participants overall.

Sue Ware, director of Union County Human Services, said as of Oct. 1, the eligibility requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) changed, increasing the income threshold by 70 for the federal poverty level (FPL) and adding to the allotment numbers.

“Just to give you an idea of what that 70% increase means going from the 130% to the 200%, previously, one person making $1,632 gross monthly qualified,” Ware said Tuesday at the county elected officia…
