A balanced breakfast
The good news is breakfast for students at North Union will be free of charge next year, but the bad news is lunch prices will rise by a quarter.
During its regular meeting on Monday, the North Union Board of Education voted to participate in the Universal Free Breakfast program for the 2026-2027 school year, a federal initiative that reimburses the district for each student’s meal. In the same breath, the board approved raising lunch prices across the district by 25 cents.
The decisions came after the board heard a presentation from Food Service Director Bev Wasserbeck. She has been pushing to make breakfast free to increase participation among free and reduced students, or students underneath the poverty line.
