Wind shear chaos

Once calls started coming into the Union County Sheriff’s Office 911 center on March 13, they didn’t quit for nearly three hours.

The day started out normally for dispatch supervisors Rachel Kerr and Brittany Rausch but by mid-afternoon, a routine windy day turned into a relentless emergency that forced the department to bring all hands on deck.

“I want to say it started at about 2:30 p.m., and once it came, there was no going back,” Kerr said.

Within minutes of those first reports, the dispatch center was overwhelmed with calls ranging from downed power lines to serious crashes as nearly 70 mph winds blew across Union County and…
