Opera House sale in flux

The contract for the Richwood Opera House sale has expired as council members begin to suspect that the buyer is getting cold feet and looking for a way out.

At the latest meeting of Richwood council on Dec. 22, Mayor Scott Jerew announced that the sale has expired due to the buyer, North Union graduate and small business owner Andrew Levering, not responding to extend any of the contracts. Jerew said that Levering did not agree to the terms of the 99-year lease, which was put in place so that the village retains ownership of the clock tower part of the building. He said Levering made counter offers but that the village attorney advised against accepting his offers.
