Thursday, March 6, 1925

W. H. Beeney, veteran of the Civil war, brought to this office recently a copy of the Cincinnati Daily Commercial, date of July 8, 1864. The news of that day consists chiefly of reports of the activities of Union and Confederate armies. Several columns of the paper are given to the story of the battle between the Union ship Kearsarge and the British manned Confederate ship Alabama. Many soldiers’ letters are contained in the paper and some casualty lists are given. The advertisements form an interesting contrast to those of today. One enterprising store advertises hoop skirts as “new invention –the best skirt for convenience and durability ever invented.” None of the advertisements is more than one column…
