Public defender sees benefits in current system

Despite local growth and the continual increase in caseload year-to-year, the Union County Public Defender said the county’s current system still works better than establishing a public defender’s office.

Perry Parsons, who heads the county’s indigent defense, recently updated the commissioners on the department’s activity and said the current public defense process with its nonprofit status works better than formally establishing a single, county public defender’s office.

“I think this system works to avoid conflicts, which I think would be the biggest issue with a full-time office,” he said.
