Closure pushes trucks onto historic bridge

Issues with truck drivers ignoring the Route 38 bridge detour may lead to a temporary closure of the Streng Road Bridge.

Union County Engineer Jeff Stauch told the county commissioners recently that officials are having problems with heavy vehicles using the historic bridge near Fairbanks as a detour rather than the posted routes.

“We don’t want to close it if we can help it. I mean, we may have to if trucks do not (cooperate). We’re just a couple weeks in, we got the entire summer before they get 38 open,” he said. “We hesitate to close it though because that’ll put traffic on Orchard Road, for instance, and that’s a hilly, curvy road and we h…
