Organizers hope success of basketball team will lead more athletes to take part

Special Olympics organizers in Union County hope the attention gained following a historic basketball season will expand participation and awareness across the community.

Union County’s Special Olympics basketball team captured its first-ever state championship this winter, winning the Division V title at the state tournament — a milestone that coaches say reflects both athletic development and personal growth among participants.

Program leaders said the team’s success came after steady improvement. Early in the season, the group struggled against opponents, but athletes showed significant progress in skill, conditioning and teamwork by the postseason.
