At 100, Scheiderer reflects on life during, after WWII

Lifelong local Marysville resident Eugene August-Alford Scheiderer, who turns 100 this week, is one of the few remaining people on Earth who saw the horrors of both the European and Pacific theaters of World War II.

Born and raised on a farm in Union County, Scheiderer was the second of four siblings-Robert, Roland and Marilyn. Growing up working the land alongside his father and older brother, Scheiderer led a quiet and rural life. That changed after graduating from Chuckery-Darby High School, now part of the Fairbanks School District, when he was called to serve in World War II.

He recalled that training was grueling and repetitive.
