County recognizes Elder Abuse Awareness Month

June is World Elder Abuse Awareness Month and Union County Senior Services is encouraging residents to spread the word.

“The purpose of Elder Abuse Awareness Month is to provide awareness and education on the abuse, neglect and exploitation our elder population,” according to a release from UCSS. “To commemorate World Elder Abuse Awareness in Union County, purple lights will light the Union County Court House from June 10-14.”

Senior Services works with several community partners including the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, Marysville Police Department and the Union County Sheriff’s Office to provide assistance to elders who have experienced neglect, abuse or exploitation.

“Perpetrators of elder abuse can include adult children, other family members, spouses, caregivers, home healthcare providers, scammers and financial predators,” according to the release. “The elder can also neglect themselves to the extent of requiring assistance.”

Residents will concerns about abuse with an elder aged 60 and up, they can contact Union County Senior Services at 937-644-1010 and choose option one.
