Local man charged in strangling

A Richwood man is being charged after allegedly strangling his girlfriend.

The Union County Grand Jury has indicted Brian Patrick Smith, 39, of 275 N. Franklin St., in Richwood, charging him with one count each of domestic violence and strangulation, which are both felonies of the fourth degree each carrying a penalty of 18 months in prison.

According to court documents, on April 19, 2025, Smith and his livein girlfriend had a verbal altercation that allegedly progressed into a pushing match.

“(Smith) did pull the hood of (his girlfriend’s) hoodie tight over her head, forcing her head down and pulling the neck of the hoodie against her throat choking her,” the documents allege. “She also had a sc…
