The North Union girls bowling team opened its season last Saturday in the best way it could.

Taking the lead in the preliminary round, the Lady Cats kept the momentum going to win the Ridgedale Rocket Baker Bash at Cooper’s Bowl in Marion.

They started the preliminary round slowly, rolling a 100 in the first baker game.

However, at the conclusion of the 12-game opening group they were first among the eight teams.

In the first bracket play match, North Union defeated Temple Christian 117-76 and 123-94.

In the semifinal, the Lady Cats downed Ridgedale 163-121, 179-125, setting up the championship match against Fredericktown.

North Union won the first match 158-153, but the Freddies captured the second match 138-135.

The championship-deciding third game also came down to the wire with North Union earning a 126-123 victory.

The NU boys team also reached the bracket tourney, but lost in the quarterfinal.

In the 12-game opening round, the Wildcats were in sixth place.

In the bracket tourney they faced off against Pleasant Red, one of the tourney favorites, and lost 190-145, 220-133 to the Spartans.
