In the completion of a Central Buckeye Conference baseball game that started on April 17, North Union scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to defeat Springfield Shawnee 10-8 last Saturday at Shawnee.

The win earned the Wildcats (16-9) a share of the Mad River Division title with Graham.

Both teams finished with a 9-7 league mark.

It was North Union’s first CBC crown since joining the league in 2019.

It was also its first title since 2011 when the Wildcats tied with Highland and Elgin in the Mid Ohio Athletic Conference Blue Division.

When played in April, the game was suspended by darkness after seven innings and the score tied at eight

North Union had opened with a 7-0 lead, but Shawnee tallied four runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

The Wildcats, however, needed just one inning to score the runs needed for a victory.

They were assisted by mistakes from Shawnee.

Miles Marlette scored on a balk and Mason Bright added another marker by racing home on a passed ball.

North Union collected just five hits, but reached base 16 times with walks.

Ashton Haubiel had two singles, while Landon Converse doubled and Bright and Drew Schmidt each singled.

Converse and Bright each drove in two runs.

North Union returns to action on Tuesday in a Division III district semifinal game at West Jefferson.
